Buy a GPS and Never Get Lost Again

It is easy to get lost whether you are driving, flying, boating, or even walking. However, there is now an apparatus available known as a GPS that will allow you to go anywhere you want to and find your way home again with just the touch of a button or two. You don't have to worry about the hassle of carrying around a big paper map or even trying to figure out how to use it. With a GPS you will simply insert your location as well as your final destination and the GPS will take you there. Even if you don't know your current location the satellite will pick up where you are and when you input where you want to go the GPS will lead you out. GPS stands for global positioning device and it is excellent to have whether you are traveling somewhere specific or not because you never know when there will be a detour, bad weather, a wreck, or anything else.

There are many different GPS systems on the market, and Garmin is one of them. You will find that the Garmin 396 GPS is similar to many other GPS models out there. If you want a Garmin GPS that offers more services than the 396 then you may want to consider the Garmin 496 GPS. This particular model talks to you, which is ultra convenient when you are trying to focus on where you are going. Many other GPS models also have this function. The apparatus will tell you where you need to take a turn to reach your ultimate destination and it will also allow you to see points of interest along the way. This includes restaurants, gas stations, hospitals, museums, and many other things you may need while traveling.

When you buy a GPS you need to consider what exactly you need. There are some base models that are fairly affordable while others are expensive and cost in the thousands of dollars. Focus on what is important to you and what you will be using it for. If you will simply be driving to work and taking an occasional vacation then you probably don't need anything extra special. However, if you are a salesman or someone who drives for a living, or flies, then you may want a model that offers more in the way of features.

Handheld Portable GPS

A handheld portable GPS unit is not really what you think it is. In GPS terminology a handheld GPS and a portable GPS are 2 different things. A handheld GPS is a small handheld device like a radio, or a wristwatch with GPS technology. A portable GPS is a unit that you can move from vehicle to vehicle if you do a lot of traveling. Portable meaning it is not permanently mounted in a certain vehicle. That way you won't get lost no matter what city you are in.

Handheld GPS receivers are now available in small units that can fit into your pocket. These units are used by skiers, bikers, hikers, and cross country enthusiasts to track progress, map return routes, save routes for later travel, and many other applications. One of the newest past times of handheld GPS users is geocaching. Geocaching is a treasure hunt using GPS to find and hide treasure containers with others. 21st century treasure hunting. Isn't that cool.

Although these units can be fun, they are also very handy in an emergency. Using Global Positioning System technology you can pinpoint your location in case of an accident, or if you get lost in the wilderness. And they fit easily in a backpack or pocket.

As with any electronic instrument these units are available with many different features. These features include: Map database; Voice activated GPS; WAAS technology, Reflection-less screen; Theft prevention functions; an option for personalized screen icons; and MP3 capability. However a unit around $100 will give you everything you need to do some hiking or backpacking and find your way home.

Different models will vary according to the GPS software and database installed. To facilitate the enjoyment of the interactive GPS unit, all the models have the basic instructions on the display screen. Most handheld GPS models come with instructions that will enable you to hear the information put out as well as read it on the screen.

Personal choice will determine which handheld GPS receiver you choose. Your choice will depend on the type of software and mapping programs that suit your requirements. Also the receiver's size, weight, and choice of internal or external antenna are things that will matter to you. It will depend on what will fit your requirements and your budget. Most units are waterproof or water-resistant and many are shock resistant in case it gets dropped.

These units will provide you with excellent basic GPS navigation whether you are in a car, on a motorcycle, or on foot.

GPS on Iphone

What doesn't the new iPhone have, this new modern day electronic smartphone that has become all the new rage is missing an all important feature - the GPS. You would almost consider this function an actual requirement for a mobile phone but the only requirement a mobile phone needs to have is to be able to call 911 in an emergency. The GPS feature is considered an important one and most smartphones on the market do have it so you ask yourself why Apple didn't include it in its design features.

How Can You Get GPS?

The expectation of a GPS was always there before its original releases. It was clear that the iPhone has a Bluetooth connectivity. People thought their problems were solved just get a Bluetooth receiver and connect it to the iPhone then get the correct GPS software and the problem solved. But not so it turned out that the GPS blue tooth could not connect to the iPhone as Apple products do not traditionally comply with other products this was also the case with the GPS software. What is needed is the additional support through Apple for third-party applications other wise trying to solve the problem of adding an GPS onto the iPhone is impossible.

Of course, there is GoogleMaps you can use to a limited extent only where you can find wireless internet, so obviously not everywhere.

Navizon GPS On Iphone

In 2007 September, Navizon eventually released a virtual GPS navigation system on iPhones. This relies on a Wi-fi and cellular tower triangulation, and is basically a peer to peer system in which users in possession of the software can contribute data. Some say that because of the way it operates it is not as good as the real GPS . The one good thing is that Navizon has a 15 day trial period which lets you test it out and if you are happy with it you can get GPS for the iPhone for less than $25.00. The firmware version 1.1.1. update reportedly rendered the software useless. However, a new version was released, and users can also get a scaled down version of this iPhone GPS for free.

It is rumored that with the new release of the 3G iphone later in 2008, Apple have planned to included in the design of the new phone a GPS realizing that it was a feature that should have been included in the original version. Well all we can do is wait and see if the 3G phone lives up to the expectation.

Knowing where the bad weather is just might allow you to go around it, saving time and frustration. Another benefit of is that it can give you up to date traffic information. This is really good because if you are trying to reach your destination by a certain time and see there is a bad wreck up ahead then you can easily take an alternate route and still arrive on time. It is really amazing at how wonderful a it really is and how it manages to get you from point A to point B and alert you to weather and road conditions.

Once you are finally on the ground or out of the car the GPS can help you find restaurants, points of interest, and much more. A GPS makes life easy when you are on the road, whether flying or driving, and that is why the GPS equipment is so popular.
